Trumbull transit riders took fewer trips in January

WARREN — Trumbull Transit Administrator Mike Salamone said Tuesday the transit system offered 3,480 one-way trips in January 2026, which was a decrease from the 3,560 trips provided during the same month in 2025.

“There was a decrease of 120 trips from January 2025,” Salamone said. “There were 387 cancellations and 78 no shows in January.”

Salamone said there were several days in January that were particularly cold, which caused some offices, including the county’s, to close. There were 2,377 senior trips in January and 1,103 trips provided to disabled residents.

Salamone told the Trumbull County Commissioners the county is expected to receive $250,400 in federal 5310 grants for the fiscal year 2027 compared to the $426,162 that was awarded to county recipients in 2026.

The Federal Transit Administration’s Section 5310 program provides federal grants for projects that improve transportation for older adults and people with disabilities. It covers capital and operating expenses for services where public transit is unavailable.

“The reason for the reduction in funds is that there were five nonprofit Trumbull-area agencies that also applied for the 5310 funds and were awarded $317,600 to purchase buses,” he said. “The five communities and agencies include Girard, Campbell and Struthers, as well as the Andrea Mahone Foundation and Youngstown Goodwill,” Salamone noted.

These groups used their funds to purchase buses.

Salamone noted the county had been fortunate in some years that other eligible agencies in the Mahoning and Trumbull regions did not apply for grant funds. The outgoing transit administrator reminded the commissioners that he intends to retire May 1 and they need to get someone in place before he leaves.

Starting at $3.23/week.
