Trumbull sheriff’s office gets $1.75M grant for new roof
WARREN — The Trumbull County commissioners are expected to vote today to accept a $1.75 million grant from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to help pay for the replacement of the roof on the Trumbull County jail.
Sheriff Michael G. Wilson told commissioners during their weekly workshop on Tuesday that the ODRC had $30 million to give out.
“We got the most of any county,” he said.
The county must fill out the appropriate paperwork to receive the funds from the construction program.
Wilson said the sheriff’s office has been reducing its annual spending over the past year.
“Now, we are getting $1.75 million we never had for a repair,” he said. “We’ve done our part to be fiscally sound and be a team player.”
Sheriff’s office Major David Bobby said the money must be spent this year.
“There is a lot of work to do before we have contractors on the roof,” he said.
Wilson said the county is looking to purchase four used cruisers from the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office that have 100,000 to 130,000 miles on them. If purchased, the used cruisers will replace Trumbull County cruisers that have at least 200,000 miles on them.
“We will get them for $9,600 apiece,” he said. “The cruisers will be fully marked, have light bars, sirens and speaker systems. The only thing we would have to put in them is the radios we have in our vehicles.”
Wilson said they are looking to purchase these vehicles because new cruisers can cost up to $71,000 each.
“We are planning to go there to make sure they are mechanically sound,” he said. “We currently have eight cars that have more than 200,000 miles on them. We have one car with more than 260,000 miles on it.”
He noted buying these cars now will buy the county some time before they reach the 200,000-mile mark and must be replaced with new vehicles.
Last week, the county announced that it is looking at the purchase of up to four new cruisers using opioid funds.
