South Side explosion lifted second story of house and dropped it

YOUNGSTOWN — The second story of a vacant home at 443 Garfield St. on the South Side was lifted up and dropped on one side of the foundation Sunday night in an explosion, a Youngstown fire report states.

The 9:56 p.m. incident was labeled an “overpressure rupture, explosion, overheat, other,” in the report, which was released Tuesday. The destroyed home was at Garfield Street and Overland Avenue.

The report describes the damage to the property at $94,800 and the loss to the contents at $20,000. The report does not list a cause, but states that the initial call was for a structure fire at 448 W. Myrtle Ave., one street south.

But while firefighters were en route, they were advised that the house behind 448 W. Myrtle had exploded. The first truck “circled to the intersection of Garfield Street and Overland Avenue” to find what was initially thought to be a single-story residential explosion.

The home sustained a “powerful explosion with major structural compromise” with no signs of fire. A search of the home was conducted “to the extent possible,” the report states. Firefighters asked dispatch to get Enbridge to shut off the gas at the curb and Ohio Edison to “cut the electric at the pole.”

Ohio Edison said a “cut signal was sent to the meter and that a lineman would be dispatched.” A search was completed as additional fire companies arrived. A noticeable smell of natural gas was detected, the report states.

Enbridge arrived, but a shutoff location could not be found. The Youngstown Street Department arrived to consult with the fire department on removal of debris to eliminate the possibility of a victim being trapped in the remaining structure or the basement, the report states.

The gas leak remained active through the remainder of the emergency because of no curb shutoff being available, the report states. Most firefighters left the scene but others were “standing by due to the gas leak,” the report states. An Enbridge crew said they would remain at the scene until the gas was secured. Caution tape was stretched around the scene.

A neighbor told The Vindicator that a large piece of equipment was used at one point to pull down a part of the house Sunday night.
