Hubbard trustee provides Coalburg update

HUBBARD TOWNSHIP — One trustee noted a potential setback in the process of a purchase of a lake with a dam slated for removal in the upcoming years.

Trustee Jason Tedrow, as part of his report Tuesday, said he, the Western Reserve Land Conservancy and the Community Foundation of Western PA and Eastern Ohio approached the county commissioners.

Tedrow said the commissioners requested the dam’s holder to have insurance for it, which he said wasn’t required by state law, but created “a little bit of a problem.”

“We’ve been out pricing some insurance on the dam — we’ve been able to get one quote, and that was for $5,000 a month, so it’s creating a little bit of a hiccup,” Tedrow said. “I don’t think it’s going to kill the project or anything like that in any way, shape or form.”

Tedrow reiterated that the insurance wasn’t required by state law, but it would potentially make things difficult and drag the purchase out.

Trustee Monica Baker questioned whether the potential liability and the township’s inability to obtain insurance were some of the reasons why the township didn’t pursue Coalburg Lake earlier.

“We would have to as a government, but it’s actually not required,” Tedrow said. “It wasn’t in the government’s hands, (but) for private ownership, that’s not a requirement.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
