Campbell awarded pair of state grants worth nearly $110K

Funds provided for senior van, police body camera system

CAMPBELL — The city has been awarded a pair of grants that will be used to buy a new senior van as well as additional body cameras and upgrades for the police department.

A $70,400 grant through the Ohio Department of Transportation will go toward the new vehicle, which will replace a similar one the city has that is about 25 years old, Mayor Bill Valentino said after Wednesday’s regular council meeting.

The van will have a ramp for those who use a wheelchair and will be able to seat eight to 10 people, Valentino added. Specifically, it will be used to transport mainly senior citizens to doctor’s appointments, on shopping trips and for other necessary needs.

The grant was submitted in October.

“We still need to get prices,” Valentino said.

Also, the city was awarded a $39,073 state grant, also submitted in October, that likely will be used to purchase about 16 additional body cameras and upgrade the system for the police department, the mayor noted.

About five years ago, the department obtained 10 cameras and recording equipment for six police cruisers. At that time, the city spent around $58,000 for the cameras, along with cloud storage space for recordings.

Also at the meeting, city Councilwoman Mary Janek, D-3rd Ward, announced a cleanup event, set for 10 a.m. to noon March 21 in Jackson Park, off Wilson Avenue. Sponsoring the two-hour gathering will be city council and the Mahoning County Green Team, which will provide garbage bags, grabbers for picking up litter, vests and other supplies, she said.

In addition, Janek recently wrote a $25,000 grant to install a quarter-mile walking track in the park, which is an often historically noted, but seldom used, space.

The park, most of which resembles a large field, contains little more than a half-court basketball area and eight concrete picnic tables on concrete slabs. She also is hoping the acreage will one day be the site of disc golf, soccer and various sporting events, Janek added.

Starting at $3.23/week.
