Woman, 78, is killed in New Middletown crash

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Two vehicles crashed around 11:30 a.m. Friday on state Route 170 just north of East Calla Road, killing one of the drivers.

A Jeep traveling south on Route 170, driven by Roseline D. Earwood, 78, of New Middletown, crossed the center line and struck a commercial van heading north and collided head-on, killing Earwood at the scene, Sgt. Adam Shonk of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Canfield Post said.

The driver of the van, a 20-year-old, was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries, he added.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and no alcohol or drugs are suspected in the accident that occurred about 100 feet north of East Calla Road, Shonk noted.

The impact resulted in a small fire that was quickly extinguished, he said.

Also responding to the scene were the Poland Township, Springfield and New Middletown police departments, along with the Springfield Fire Department.

The crash is still under investigation
