Struthers mayor: Enbridge fixes gas billing mistake

STRUTHERS — When many city residents receive their gas bills next month, they likely will be pleased to also see a return to normalcy.

“They have corrected the situation,” Mayor Catherine Cercone Miller said after Wednesday’s regular city council meeting.

She was referring to Enbridge Gas, which has fixed a problem that resulted in a few thousand residents seeing erroneous escalated charges reflected on their gas bills this month — up to nearly three times the normal amount.

Instead of being charged the regular negotiated $3.74 per MCF, they were accidentally charged $8.84, she said.

MCF denotes 1,000 cubic feet of natural gas. It is typically used to measure gas production and consumption, as well as to calculate billing.

An estimated 2,600 Enbridge customers in the city were affected by the error and will have their next bills credited, Cercone Miller noted. The mayor added that her own bill reflected the erroneous calculation.

In addition, beginning in March, the city will be switching its natural gas aggregate from Constellation Energy Corp. to Dublin-based IGS Energy, the latter of which will be its natural gas supplier, the mayor continued.

Cercone Miller attributed the situation to an honest mistake on the company’s part. She also has asked those affected to pay their current bills as-is.

Anyone with further questions or concerns are asked to call Enbridge Gas at 800-362-7557.

Also at the session, the mayor announced the annual Fireman’s Association spaghetti dinner, set for 3 to 7 p.m. March 7 at St. Nicholas Great Hall, 762 Fifth St. Tickets are $5 per person. Children under 5 are free.

Starting at $3.23/week.
