Ohio transit week ends Saturday
Western Reserve Transit Authority, in partnership with Ohio Public Transit Association, will join transit agencies across the state in celebrating the ninth annual Ohio Loves Transit Week — a week dedicated to recognizing the essential role public transportation plays in strengthening Ohio’s economy, workforce and quality of life.
“Ohio Loves Transit Week is a reminder that public transportation is more than buses and routes. It’s access to opportunity. In the Mahoning Valley, WRTA connects people to jobs, education, health care and essential services every single day”, said Dean J. Harris, Chief Executive Officer of WRTA. “Our service strengthens local businesses, supports workforce growth, and ensures our neighbors can stay active and engaged in the community.”
WRTA provides more than 2 million rides each year, helping create and sustain jobs that keep Mahoning Valley communities strong. Statewide, public transit delivers approximately 71 million rides annually, connecting Ohioans to jobs, schools, medical appointments, shopping and essential services. From delivering groceries to providing reliable transportation to work, transit remains a critical link for everyday life.
WRTA also serves vulnerable populations, including seniors and individuals with disabilities, by providing access to job training programs, medical appointments, workplaces, and adult day care facilities. Public transportation ensures residents can remain active, independent members of their communities.
As Ohio’s economy continues to grow, transit agencies partner with businesses and local communities to connect in-demand workers and students to employment and education opportunities. Public transit plays a vital role for individuals who do not have access to personal vehicles, ensuring equitable access to opportunity.
“As our region continues to grow and evolve, public transportation remains a critical piece of sustainable development. WRTA is proud to partner with local governments, businesses, and educational institutions to meet the mobility needs of today while planning for tomorrow,” Harris added.
These benefits are among the many reasons Ohio’s lawmakers continue to support public transportation investment. Throughout Ohio Loves Transit Week, WRTA will recognize elected officials, community partners, riders, and stakeholders who help strengthen public transit in the Mahoning Valley. The week ends Saturday.
As part of the celebration, WRTA and Gohio Commute are partnering and encouraging riders to log their trips for a chance to win daily gift cards. Participation is free by signing up at gohiocommute.com or downloading the Gohio Commute app.
