No charges filed against latest Belmont Pines runaways
Third incident this month
LIBERTY — Police Chief Ray Buhala said no charges are being filed against juveniles after Liberty police were called to Belmont Pines, a mental health facility, early Friday morning for the third time this month.
According to a police report, officers were called via radio to locate four juvenile girls, who had run away from the facility, after reportedly assaulting an employee and stealing his keys, with dispatchers saying that the employee was en route to the hospital for evaluation.
Officers searched the school and library areas, and one officer eventually found all four of them in the Belmont Avenue Giant Eagle’s parking lot. They fled as soon as the officer started approaching, the police report states.
The report states two of the girls were able to be handcuffed with no issues, but the remaining ones fled westbound into a wooded area behind the GetGo gas station — leading officers to search the area, but not finding anyone.
The remaining two juveniles were eventually apprehended at two separate areas, a Macarthur Drive address and the Speedway gas station on Belmont, and returned to Belmont Pines, where they were released back into staff custody.
The report states that an officer went to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital to contact the victim and obtain a witness statement after struggling to understand him in a phone call.
While there, the victim explained that he was trying to open the bathroom door when one of the girls got behind him, and when he turned around, the other three were standing there, according to the report.
The victim said the girls started attacking him, pushing him every which way, then throwing him on the floor and eventually kicking and hitting him — holding the keys in his hands the entire time, which the girls were trying to take from him, the report states.
The victim eventually let go of the keys because they were pulling his finger and it was hurting, adding that he screamed for help, but no one came. The victim told the officer that he wished to press charges, with the officer noting no visible external injuries, the report states.
The victim said he experienced pain in his neck, back, hand and finger.
A Belmont Pines representative confirmed the girls left the facility without authorization.
“We appreciate the support of local law enforcement, who facilitated their safe return. We made the appropriate notifications, including to guardians,” the representative said. “Belmont Pines Hospital remains focused on providing high-quality care to children and adolescents with special, and often complex, mental health needs.”
