Man shot by police during arrest is indicted on felonious assault
YOUNGSTOWN — John Doyle, 75, who allegedly pointed a gun at police officers trying to arrest him on a warrant Feb. 5 at a home on Galluppi Drive in Coitsville, was indicted Thursday on failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer and felonious assault with a firearm specification.
After he pointed the gun at officers with the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitives Task Force, officers shot Doyle, according to a news release from task force Public Affairs Officer Anne Murphy.
Doyle is in the Mahoning County jail having been booked Feb. 11, according to jail records. Doyle’s booking photo shows him wearing what appears to be a hospital gown.
If Doyle is convicted of the felonious assault charge and gun specification, he could get more than 10 years in prison. The failure to comply is a low-level felony that could add 18 months in prison if convicted.
The task force press release states that on Feb. 5, officers were “looking for Doyle, who was wanted by the Poland Police Department for failing to comply with police orders after fleeing from a traffic stop.”
Members of the task force arrived at the address where Doyle was believed to be living and spoke with other family members in the home. Officers eventually made contact with Doyle, who was in a motorhome that was parked on the property.
“As officers called out to the suspect inside the motorhome, he brandished a firearm and pointed it at officers,” the news release stated. “At that time, officers fired at the suspect.”
Emergency Medical Services personnel were “called to the scene, and members of the task force provided emergency medical care until EMS arrived.” Doyle was transported to the hospital, the release stated.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, an arm of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, later stated that it was investigating the shooting. BCI spokesman Steve Irwin stated that no law enforcement officers were injured. The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office requested that BCI carry out the investigation, Irwin stated.
Galluppi Drive is north of U.S. Route 422 near Victory Christian Church, northeast of Campbell. The task force consists of officers with many, federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
