Man sent to prison in 2007 has new felony indictment
YOUNGSTOWN — Bruce L. Clinkscale, 53, of Shirley Road, was indicted Thursday on charges of felonious assault with a firearm specification, misdemeanor domestic violence and having weapons while under disability in a Nov. 4 altercation in Boardman.
The weapons under disability charge alleges that he had, carried or used any firearm or dangerous ordnance without being allowed to do so.
According to a Nov. 4 Boardman police report, a woman reported that night she was assaulted by an unknown man in the driveway of her residence. An officer spoke with her at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, where she had gone for treatment. She said she was at home drinking alcohol with friends and then left at 7:47 p.m. to pick up a family member from work.
As she was about to enter her vehicle, the man walked up behind her and struck her in the right side with a metal object, which the report stated was “believed to be a pipe.” After he struck her twice, she looked at him, and he struck her in the face two or three times with a closed fist, the report states. Her neighbor turned on his or her front door light, which caused the man to run off, the report states.
He was described as a small-framed, dark-skinned male wearing a hat. She was not able to describe the clothing he wore. She contacted her mother, who later drove her to the hospital. While the officer was speaking with the victim, the officer saw that she had a black eye and a cut on her bottom lip. She said there was no bruising on her side at that time.
The woman went to the Boardman Police Department Nov. 7 and reported that she was not “completely truthful with the suspect’s information.” She stated the full name of the suspect is Bruce Lamont Clinkscale. She said she was “untruthful because she is fearful of him and does not want to get him in trouble.”
Members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Clinkscale on warrants issued through the Boardman Police Department for felonious assault and misdemeanor domestic violence. He was taken to the Mahoning County jail.
It is not clear why Clinkscale was charged with the weapons offense.
PRISON SENTENCE
Clinkscale was 34 years old in June 2007 when he was sentenced to 15 years in prison in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for crimes committed against four people in three separate incidents in Youngstown in 2006, according to The Vindicator archives and common pleas court records.
Judge R. Scott Krichbaum sentenced Clinkscale after Clinkscale pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery for robbing two men at gunpoint at a Tod Lane home in February 2006, two counts of felonious assault for firing a handgun at a former girlfriend in June 2006 and shooting the former girlfriend’s ex-husband in the legs at the former Coconut Grove tavern in Youngstown in July 2006.
Then-Mahoning County Assistant Prosecutor Martin Desmond said at the time that Clinkscale was on house arrest and had an argument with a former girlfriend, causing him to leave the residence. That caused police to issue an arrest warrant for him.
The woman told police Clinkscale returned to the home on Pasadena Avenue and shot at her and her house, Desmond said. Clinkscale later saw the woman’s ex-husband at the Coconut Grove tavern and shot him in retaliation against the woman, Desmond said.
The man nearly died because a bullet hit a major artery, and he suffered permanent leg injuries, Desmond said. Clinkscale was on the run until his arrest in January 2007, Desmond said.
