Man dies in Boardman house fire

BOARDMAN — A local man is dead after a house fire.

Boardman fire Chief Mark Pitzer said his department responded to a call at 3910 Risher Drive at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday morning, arriving five minutes later with three engines.

“The neighbor heard some popping, looked out her window, and saw her neighbor’s house on fire, with flames already coming through the roof,” he said. “Firefighters were able to open the side door and look in, and they thought they saw something in the kitchen, went in and located a male victim between the kitchen and hallway, removed him, and began CPR.”

Pitzer said a Lane LifeTrans ambulance arrived soon thereafter and transported the man to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where doctors tried to revive him but were unsuccessful. He said the man most likely died from a combination of burns and smoke inhalation.

Pitzer said his department is confident they have identified the man, but is waiting on confirmation from the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office. He said the man was the only occupant of the house.

“We have contacted the state fire marshal’s office, and they’ve been out there pretty much all day today, investigating. They’re following up on a few things they found,” Pitzer said.

He said there is nothing suspicious about the fire right now, but also “nothing for sure” to tell them the exact cause of the fire.

“The house is probably a total loss, with fire damage throughout the first floor,” he said.

He said the Cardinal Joint Fire District out of Canfield sent automatic mutual aid to the scene in the form of a ladder truck to assist Boardman’s three engines. Firefighters were at the house until well after 4 a.m. extinguishing the blaze. Pitzer said no firefighters were injured in the incident.
