Investigation begins into officer involved shooting in Coitsville
COITSVILLE — The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place Thursday in the 200 block of Galluppi Drive in Coitsville Township. No law enforcement officers were injured.
Galluppi Drive travels north off U.S. Route 422 near Victory Christian Church northeast of Campbell.
The suspect was taken to the hospital “and is currently being treated for his injuries,” according to a press release from Northern Ohio Violent Fugitives Task Force Public Affairs Officer Anne Murphy. The release states that the incident occurred in the afternoon.
The release states that members of the task force were involved in the shooting during an attempted arrest of a fugitive. The release states that task force members were looking for a 74-year-old man who was wanted by the Poland Village Police Department for allegedly failing to comply with police orders after allegedly fleeing from a traffic stop.
Members of the task force arrived at the address where the suspect was believed to be living and spoke with other family members in the home. Officers eventually made contact with the suspect, who was in a motorhome parked on the property.
As officers called out to the suspect inside the motorhome, he brandished a firearm and pointed it at officers, the release states.
“At that time officers fired at the suspect,” the release states. Ambulance personnel were called to the scene, and task force members provided emergency medical care until the ambulance arrived.
Ohio BCI will handle the investigation, the release states. The state agency was requested by the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio BCI Press Secretary Steve Irwin stated.
