Hubbard trustee gives update on Coalburg Lake

HUBBARD TOWNSHIP — The groups involved in the purchase of a lake with a dam slated for removal this year will have a bit more time to progress through things, it was announced at Tuesday’s trustees meeting.

Trustee Jason Tedrow, as part of his report, said officials have received another two-year extension on the dam’s removal, noting it was moved to the end of November 2028.

“That Clean Ohio Fund, tentatively, should be distributed by the end of March, which will begin the transition of the property to the Western Reserve Land Conservancy — excluding that dam section,” Tedrow said.

Trustees passed a resolution in August moving forward with allowing the Western Reserve Land Conservancy to apply for grant funds on behalf of the township to purchase Coalburg Lake, excluding the dam, following a lengthy presentation by Jacob Pries, a southeast field director with the conservancy.

Coalburg Land Partners LLC owns the property on which the dam is located.

The Coalburg Dam is more than 100 years old, and its owners were previously ordered by the local court to have it removed in September 2024 because it is in poor condition. However, a group of residents formed a committee to save it.

Tedrow said the conservancy is working through plans for when and how the property will open to the public after the acquisition, adding that it may not happen immediately because other unnamed matters need to be addressed.

“In speaking with them, we will be scheduling a cleanup day at some point later this year to address some of the dumping on the property, which includes some tires,” Tedrow said.

Tedrow said new signs have been placed on the property to keep trespassers away after its current owner reported issues with ATV traffic and trucks that have been disturbing the neighborhood.

Starting at $3.23/week.
