Two Cardinal Fire officers get sworn in

CANFIELD — Two more Cardinal Joint Fire District firefighters moved up the ladder on Monday, filling positions of lieutenant and captain, which resulted from Capt. Conner O’Halloran taking a position as Mahoning County Emergency Planning and E911 Administrator last year.

At Monday’s board meeting, Lt. Herb Fogle was sworn in as captain and firefighter / paramedic Dave Hess stepped up to lieutenant, filling Fogle’s spot. The vacancy in the full-time roster was filled by part-time firefighter / paramedic Sam Kanagy last year.

“That brings an end to the domino effect,” said CJFD Chief Don Hutchison.

In other business, the board approved several purchases, including turnout gear and a new command vehicle. The new vehicle was approved at $63,135.93 from the Fallsway Company of Akron. Hutchison said there would need to be an additional amount for a special cap for the truck, but that cost would be known at a future meeting.

Also approved was $27,880 for eight sets of turnout gear. Each set would cost $3,350, plus another $135 for ladder rescue belts.

“By ordering now, we are saving over $3,000,” Hutchison said. “The price per set will be going up Feb. 1. The order we are placing now will be similar to what we paid last year.”

Under the chief’s report, Hutchison said the December numbers came in at 247 calls for service. Of that number, 123 were ambulance transports and there were eight mutual aid calls. The total for 2025 came in at 2,979 calls for service.

During Sunday’s snowstorm, Hutchison said his department dealt with one truck rollover into the median on state Route 11.

As an emergency measure, Hutchison has a tanker on standby and responding to fire calls since most hydrants are buried. The command truck also has a rear ramp with a snow blower on it, in case of a medical call to an unplowed location. He said a quick path could give paramedics access to respond and remove a patient.

Starting at $3.23/week.
