Police called for 2 car fires possibly connected to snowfall

YOUNGSTOWN — Two car fires described as having occurred because of heavy snowfall were reported Sunday in Youngstown.

At 9:19 a.m. Sunday officers were called to Dogwood Lane at Buckeye Court on the East Side for a car fire involving a 2016 Ford Fusion that Youngstown firefighters asked to be towed from the scene.

An officer saw that the car was damaged by fire. Firefighters said a driver had been trying to leave the house in heavy snow and had gotten stuck, the report states.

“They revved their engine and spun their wheels until the vehicle eventually caught fire,” the report states. The vehicle was towed.

At 2:12 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to Millet Avenue on the West Side at the request of the Youngstown Fire Department and observed a Chevy HHR in the middle of the roadway that was burned.

Members of the Youngstown Fire Department reported that they extinguished the fire, which was “caused by overheating of the engine due to the heavy snowfall and being stuck in the snow,” according to the police report.

When police officers arrived, the owner or occupants were not there, the report states. The car was towed as an abandoned vehicle. No further information was provided in the report as to what caused the car to overheat or whether the fire was considered suspicious.

Starting at $3.23/week.
