Poland council discusses committee formations

Police chief gives 2025 wrap-up

POLAND — Village council had a light agenda on Tuesday, but did make a move toward forming committees to handle some of the tasks for 2026.

Three committees need to be put together, including a committee on helmets for electric bikes and scooters, a committee for grants and a final one for Ohio House Bill 96, which deals with local government entities and cyber security.

“We need to be careful who serves on it,” said Village Solicitor Jay Macejko. “We need to keep it limited.”

He said the committee will assist in moving the village forward when it comes to cyber security. Because the committee will be dealing with sensitive information, it needs to be limited to officials, Macejko said.

The other two committees would be open to village residents who want to help. Councilwoman Laurie LaPLante said anyone interested in serving should contact her or another council member. The decision was to present candidates for all three committees at the next meeting.

Also Tuesday, police Chief Don Lambert updated council on the final numbers for 2025. He said the department operated with five full-time officers and two part-time. Of the full-time officers, two were school resource officers.

“In 2025, we made 325 arrests for charges of operating a vehicle impaired, drugs, guns, domestics and one assault,” Lambert said. “We also issued roughly 1,500 citations and took 395 reports. That is what we are able to do with five full-time officers in a year.”

In other business, council:

* Heard from LaPlante that she would like to put a photo of each village official along with how best to contact them and post it all on the village’s website. Macejko said he would have an ordinance at the next meeting on excessive noise that would include permissible hours for construction.

* Heard from Mayor Tim Sicafuse that the grant for the Sheridan Road project was submitted Jan. 16 and there were a couple of trees that needed to be removed along the route.

* Approved repairs to the 2019 police department’s pickup for replacing a cracked radiator and bad hoses at a cost not to exceed $860.

Starting at $3.23/week.
