Canfield trustees hear stormy report
CANFIELD TOWNSHIP — Public Works Foreman Bob Burkett talked Tuesday about the five-day snowstorm two weeks ago and how the road department suffered a series of setbacks during it.
“Truck 204 broke down early during the storm,” Burkett said. “One of our drivers got the flu, our loader (for the salt) quit working and our snowblower wouldn’t run.”
He said another truck had a brake problem that was fixed quickly so it could get back on the road. Burkett added that one of the snowplow drivers backed into a mailbox and knocked it over.
“We were able to repair it,” he said. “When it happens in the future, do the drivers need to submit to a drug test?”
Trustee Joe Paloski said if it were a major crash with a lot of damage, there should be a drug test, but all three trustees felt a mailbox was a minor incident that is almost expected to happen in snow removal.
“I don’t believe it warrants a drug test,” trustee Marie Cartwright said.
Trustee Brian Governor said if there is a big insurance claim for a mailbox, then Burkett should use his judgement regarding drug tests.
Trustees did unanimously approve repairs to truck 204 by Ascendance Truck Centers at a cost not to exceed $7,068.
