Canfield man faces felony domestic violence charges

BOARDMAN — A man is charged with felonies related to domestic violence after his wife showed up at the hospital last week with visible scars and bruising, according to a police report.

Newton Val Murphy, 41, of Canfield, appeared in Mahoning County Boardman Court, charged with felonious assault and intimidation — second- and third-degree felonies, respectively — and domestic violence, a first-degree misdemeanor. Judge Joseph Houser imposed a total of $15,000 cash or surety bond and ordered him to have no contact with the victim. He has since been released from Mahoning County Jail after turning himself in to police.

The Boardman police report states that police responded to a local urgent-care facility on U.S. Route 224 on Jan. 8 to take a report from the woman, who said she came to the medical facility because of headaches she was having from an alleged assault by Murphy on Jan. 3.

The report states that there is a documented history of problems between the couple, largely stemming from fights over his infidelity.

The report states that the woman told police the Jan. 3 fight began when she grabbed his phone during an argument about infidelity. At that point, he threw her against a wall, repeatedly banged her head off the floor and tried to throw her down the stairs, she said.

The report states there was a visible lump on the back of her head and a “large amount of bruising” on her chest, arms and ribs.

The report states the woman also provided police with pictures of her injuries from the day of the attack and throughout the days between then and her hospital visit.

The woman told police she did not call them sooner because she was afraid to deal with likely retaliation from Murphy for calling them. The report states that Murphy is known to carry a gun.

Starting at $3.23/week.
