Body found near garbage receptacles downtown

YOUNGSTOWN — The body of a man was found near garbage receptacles on Wick Avenue downtown Tuesday afternoon. Near the body were items suggesting that the man was sleeping there, such as foam cardboard and a pillow, according to a Youngstown police report.

Lt. Mohammad Awad of the detective division said there was no apparent foul play observed at the scene. Police are awaiting additional information, but the man’s death is not being investigated as a homicide, he said. As of Wednesday morning, the man had not been positively identified.

Police officers were sent to West Commerce Street at 12:41 p.m. for a deceased person found near garbage receptacles.

The call had been made by an unknown male caller to the property manager, who said the caller did not seem to be a tenant. The caller only said they saw the body of a man that appeared to be unconscious or dead. The caller mentioned the Erie Terminal building on Commerce Street multiple times, the report states.

When officers arrived, they checked the Erie Terminal building on West Commerce Street and an area across West Commerce Street where garbage receptacles and grease containers are located, but they did not find a body.

An officer went to an undisclosed area on Wick Avenue “where multiple (garbage receptacles) are stored in the loading dock area,” the report states.

Behind all of the (garbage receptacles), was a dark-skinned black man. He was clothed in a black coat, green sweatshirt, black pants and brown boots.

“The immediate area around the male appeared as if he had been sleeping there,” the report states, mentioning the foam cardboard and pillow. Also nearby was some extra clothing and a pair of shoes.

The man was pronounced dead at 12:59 p.m. by an ambulance worker, who contacted the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office. Detectives and crime lab personnel were sent to the scene to investigate.

The body was later taken by the coroner’s office body removal team, the report states.
