YSU cuts tuition for military taking some online courses

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown State University Board of Trustees has adopted a resolution to approve a special reduced tuition rate for active military members enrolled in certain online bachelor’s degree programs.

During their quarterly meeting Thursday morning in Tod Hall, trustees unanimously approved the measure, which aligns with Ohio Department of Higher Education procedures that require such boards to approve a waiver of tuition and fees for students.

Specifically, fees for in-state and nonresident students are $460 and $465 per credit, respectively.

Under the resolution, those in the military — including Reservists — who are eligible for the reduced rate and live in Ohio will have $210 of the fees waived, or 45.7% of the rate. Eligible out-of-state students in the military will have $215 of their fees waived, for a 46.2% reduction, according to the document.

The resolution, however, does not contain a list of the online bachelor’s degree programs.

Also, the U.S. Department of War’s Military Tuition Assistance program determines eligibility for the reduced rates, YSU President Bill Johnson said after Thursday’s session. The program pays 75% of the rate, with a cap of $250 per credit, he noted.

Also during the session, Johnson said in his report that the paperwork has been signed for the university to assume operations at and ownership of the former Eastern Gateway Community College campus in Steubenville.

The next transformative steps will be to prepare the classrooms for instruction and change certain signage, Johnson said.

A community open house to introduce prospective students in the Steubenville region and surrounding areas is set for this spring semester, though Johnson was unable to provide a date.

If all goes according to plan, the campus should be ready for classes this summer, he added.

Beforehand, YSU acquired 13 acres on which the building and adjacent parking lots sit. The primary goals are to offer expanded educational and workforce opportunities primarily to those who live in the Ohio Valley and provide certificates, degrees, support services and local employment opportunities, the university’s website shows.

Upcoming plans also include recruiting and enrolling students, along with renovations and hiring staff, the website states.

Starting at $3.23/week.
