WRTA bus driver assaulted; man charged
YOUNGSTOWN — A passenger on a Western Reserve Transit Authority bus punched the bus driver three to four times in the head as he was getting off of the bus at 2732 Glenwood Ave. at 8:24 a.m. Thursday, a Youngstown police report states.
The suspect, Marshall Herron, 24, was arrested Monday.
The report states the man got on the bus at the downtown WRTA bus station. He was “irate due to wait times and drop off locations” but did not assault the driver then, the report states.
But when he exited, he did not say anything but struck the driver, who said the attack was “completely unprovoked.” After the attack, the suspect walked west on West Indianola Avenue, the report states.
Ambulance personnel were called to the scene, and the driver was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment. A WRTA supervisor arrived at the scene, which is near Gateway Gas Mart, and said video from the downtown bus station would be available for detectives.
On Monday, Herron turned himself in at the Youngstown Police Department on a warrant issued Monday through Youngstown Municipal Court and was taken to the Mahoning County jail.
Herron will be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. today on a charge of assault, a first-degree misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to six months in the Mahoning County jail if convicted. Herron remained in the Mahoning County jail Tuesday afternoon.
Herron has one previous criminal case in Youngstown Municipal Court, another misdemeanor assault charge, from 2022. He later pleaded no contest to the original charge and was sentenced to six months in the Mahoning County jail with all of that suspended except for credit for the 42 days he had already served in the Mahoning County jail.
His probation in that case was terminated in February 2024, court records show.
