Water drainage issues surface at Canfield Township meeting
CANFIELD TOWNSHIP — Trustees tackled several water issues at their meeting Tuesday, including one that came up during public comments.
“I was wanting to know where things are with the water and the ABC Water and Stormwater District,” said Shelly Courtney of Abbey Road.
Courtney, along with other Abbey Road residents, had been dealing with flooding issues in their back and side yards. One fix that was brought up during the meeting was the recent completion of a swale along the western edge of the properties that will drain into a pond across the street. The swale is a grass mound that can easily be mowed and maintained. It will direct the excess storm water to a 24-inch pipe to flow away from the properties in question.
“Township Administrator Keith Rogers was out there (at the site) trying to determine where the water is coming from,” said Trustee Marie Cartwright.
She said it was originally thought to be runoff from businesses that faced U.S. Route 224, but investigations during heavy rains have shown that not to be the case. She said the township will continue monitoring to find the source of the excess runoff.
Courtney also questioned if individuals could request ABC Water and Stormwater District projects. Cartwright said any individual can go before the ABC board and make requests.
A meeting took place earlier in the afternoon to review a potential agreement between the ABC District and Canfield Township.
“We reviewed an agreement regarding the water lines down Turner Road,” said Chairman Brian Governor. “Initially, we were talking about giving the water district around $325,000 as a loan.”
Governor said the money would have to be paid back by ABC, but it would help the district secure a grant from the Army Corps of Engineers for the project. The afternoon meeting was a simple review of the proposed agreement. The final numbers and details are still being discussed.
“We are hoping to approve this by the end of 2025,” he said. “We are going to go as far down Turner Road as we can with the waterline.”
Also approved at the ABC meeting was a financial assistance request from trustees, allocating $11,197 for the Westbury Park catch basin repair project, and a $4,485 agreement with Michigan-based Hyfi for flow monitoring within the Cranberry Run watershed.
A final, year-end trustees meeting was discussed and the finalized date will be posted on the township’s website.
In other business:
•Governor reported the township received the insurance funds for the Summit Street Fire and those funds could be released soon with proof of the work being done.
•Trustees unanimously agreed to purchase two Kenwood hand-held portable radios with battery chargers, antenna, and belt clips from Cross Radio Service at a cost not to exceed $960. The radios would be for the public works department.
•Governor talked briefly about a safety grant the township will receive to change the township website to a “.gov” domain for added security.
