Stabbing leads to charges
Youngstown woman faces one count of felonious assault
AUSTINTOWN — A woman is in jail after police said she assaulted her boyfriend Tuesday night for throwing away her drugs.
Mahoning County Court records show that Elyse Barron, 38, of Youngstown, remained in the Mahoning County jail as of Wednesday afternoon. She made an initial appearance by video on Wednesday morning in Mahoning County Austintown Court, where she is charged with one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony.
Judge Scott D. Hunter imposed a $20,000 cash or surety bond and ordered her to have no contact with the victim. A pretrial hearing is set for Jan. 14.
While she has no previous offenses listed under Mahoning County’s court system, Youngstown Municipal Court records show Barron is also wanted there on a warrant for failure to appear for a hearing on misdemeanor drug paraphernalia and open container charges in 2023.
The Austintown police report states that officers responded around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday to the 4100 block of New Road after a 911 hangup call in which the caller claimed to have been attacked.
When police found the man coming out of a house in that area, he was covered in blood and said his girlfriend had fled the home after stabbing him. Police noted obvious open wounds on his left ear and right arm.
The report states the man told police he was letting Barron stay at his place because she was struggling and had recently become homeless. He said he and Barron had returned from a local bar and he went to lie down in bed, while Barron went into the bathroom. After she was gone for a considerable period of time, he went into the bathroom to see what she was doing.
The report states he found her snorting drugs through a straw off the bathroom sink. He became irate and brushed all the drugs into the sink, because he said he did not want drugs around his other family members.
The report states that he went back to the bedroom and laid down again. After a couple minutes, Barron came into the room and started yelling about the drugs. He told police she began to hit him and eventually bit his left ear and left arm.
The man said Barron then took scissors from behind her back and attacked him. He raised his right arm to hold her off and she stabbed him several times in the forearm and hand, and also bit him on the right forearm while stabbing him, the report states.
While officers were processing the scene at the house, others were out searching for Barron, and they soon found her walking away from the Golden Food Mart on New Road. The report states that police arrested her without incident. She refused to provide a DNA sample, but police did take photos of what appeared to be fresh blood spatter on her bag. They also collected the scissors from the bedroom and took photos of that scene.
Court records do not indicate that any drug-related charges have been filed against Barron for the incident.
