Police busy after responding to altercations at Chaney-East game

YOUNGSTOWN — Several incidents were reported Friday night following reports of students at Chaney High School fighting after a Chaney-East High School basketball game.

The initial report was from 8:19 p.m. at the high school at 731 S. Hazelwood Ave., for crowd control after officers were advised that “kids were getting unruly towards the end of the basketball game.”

The fights were happening in the rear lot of the school.

The report states that “While more officers started arriving, fights began happening. It was a group of male juveniles 3-on-3 fighting each other on three separate occasions where officers had to keep breaking (it) up. But once officers made each party leave off of property, that group of kids was finished fighting,” the report states.

At the back entrance to the school, a fourth fight took place with six to 10 juveniles participating with about 50 to 100 kids “standing around watching. Officers then deployed their department-issued” stun guns, the report states. The kids then dispersed.

About five to 10 minutes later, another group of seven kids were fighting on the left side of the building with many juveniles watching, the report states.

Officers told the kids to stop, but they did not, so officers again deployed their stun guns on the individuals who were fighting, the report states. After the second round of stun gun use, the juveniles left the area.

GLENAVEN AVENUE

A second report from 9:54 p.m. Friday, states that police were called to West Glenaven Avenue at Hillman Avenue for a fight. Officers then learned that a ShotSpotter notification indicated that 10 gunshots were fired in that area.

Officers learned that prior to their arrival, a red truck traveled east on West Glenaven and someone inside fired shots at a house. Officers learned that no one in the house was injured. An officer found two spent bullet shell casings in front of a home on West Glenaven. An officer also found a spent casing in front of another home on the street.

A witness said the gunfire “stems from an incident that occurred shortly before at Chaney High School.”

One woman said her daughter said had been hit by an adult woman while at Chaney and that the woman’s daughter also was involved, the report states.

A witness said a woman called someone “in an attempt to fight her for hitting her daughter.” The witness said that while a girl was at the Glenaven address in a car, three people approached the female, and one of them appeared to be carrying a “long gun.” The situation did not escalate and vehicles left the area.

The vehicles involved included a white sedan, a silver Dodge Ram and a red Jeep. As the vehicles left, someone fired gunshots in the direction of West Glenaven Avenue.

While investigating that, a call came in for an incident at the Circle K gas station, 1821 Mahoning Ave., that was related to the incidents at Chaney High School. The spent bullet shell casings were collected.

At 9:33 p.m. Friday, officers were on patrol after leaving Chaney and were told that kids who left Chaney were in a white Toyota Corolla at the Circle K on Mahoning Avenue, “possibly armed and looking to continue the fight.

Officers said the Corolla was traveling south on North Hartford Avenue toward officers, then quickly made a left turn into the driveway of 31 N. Hartford Avenue without using a turn signal.

Officers made a traffic stop. The rear doors of the car opened, and people started to flee from the vehicle. But officers were able to command the occupants to put their hands on the roof of the car, the report states. As more officers arrived, all of the occupants were taken from the car. As the final occupant was removed, a handgun was found in the car, partially covered by a hat. It was in the location where an 18-year-old was sitting. He later admitted it was his. He was placed in a cruiser and later taken to the Mahoning County jail. As an 18-year-old, he is not qualified to carry a handgun, the report states. No new charges were on file Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court for the suspect.

One occupant had a warrant through Mahoning County Juvenile Court and was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice detention center.

Starting with the next school year, Chaney and East high schools and middle schools will be merged into one high school and middle school at the East Side campus.

Starting at $3.23/week.
