Police arrest suspect in Austintown shooting
City man faces felony charges in Austintown crime
AUSTINTOWN — A man is in police custody, charged with several felonies related to a shooting at a local apartment complex on Wednesday.
Mikklo I. Delgado, 23, of Youngstown is in the Mahoning County jail, charged with felonious assault and improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation, both second-degree felonies; tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony; inducing panic, a fourth-degree-felony; and possession of criminal tools, a fifth-degree felony.
A news release from Austintown police also states the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests and charges are possible.
Police Chief Valorie Delmont Wednesday evening stated two men were taken to the hospital after exchanging gunfire in the hallway of the apartment building at 1001 Compass West Drive.
One was taken by ambulance, in critical condition, and the other taken by car and listed as stable. Thursday’s press release did not indicate any change to the condition of the critical patient.
Court records show Delgado is due for an initial appearance by video in Mahoning County Austintown Court at 12:30 p.m. Monday.
In October 2020, Delgado was charged in Youngstown with improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony. In February 2021, he pleaded guilty to that charge, and two associated misdemeanor charges were dropped. Judge R. Scott Krichbaum sentenced him to six to 18 months of probation.
He also has several misdemeanor convictions, mostly for drug- and traffic-related offenses.
Wednesday’s shooting is the most recent violent crime at the apartment complex that has been the scene of several such crimes in recent years.
Those include at least two shooting murders — Ashley Lockhart in 2021 and Vincent Tarver in 2023; a stabbing in April 2024; assault and burglary in January, and another shooting in May over a drug deal gone wrong.
Stephen Green was sentenced to life in prison in December 2023 for Lockhart’s death, and Ethan Richmond in May was given 11 to 15 years in prison for Tarver’s death.
