Peace Light now available in Mahoning Valley

YOUNGSTOWN — The Peace Light for 2025 is available free to the community to anyone wishing to bring the luminaire into their homes for the Advent and Christmas season.

The public can bring a candle, lantern or other device to either JMJ Spiritual Connection, 3434 Canfield Road, Youngstown, or St. Nicholas Church, 764 Fifth St., Struthers, in the lower church chapel during regular business hours.

Candles are available at both locations for purchase.

The Peace Light is sponsored by Scouting America and the Catholic Committee on Scouting. Organizers said the Peace Light has been a holiday tradition for many families, places of worship and businesses.

Robert Granchie, who has served as the chair for the Youngstown Diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting, is known as the “Keeper of the Light” and took the light to two locations.

Local organizers said the light was not able to be transported to America this year from Jerusalem because of ongoing conflict in that region. The light can be maintained and relit as long as the original wick was first lit from a burning Peace Light.

Scouting America and the Diocese of Youngstown also reflect on and remember Michael Kupec, who oversaw the Peace Light program for many years. He died in 2023.

Starting at $3.23/week.
