Campbell plans to play ball at Roosevelt Park again
CAMPBELL – After a long period of dormancy, some city baseball fields will be seeing an end to their seasons-long time out.
During their regular council meeting Wednesday evening, city officials adopted a resolution to enter into a contract with Avalanche Baseball to reactivate the use of the fields in Roosevelt Park.
“We will get 50% of what he brings in regarding tournament fees, but more importantly, the main ballfield will be used after years,” Mayor Bill Valentino said after the session.
Valentino was referring to Kenneth Krainock, who is affiliated with Sharpsville, Pa.-based Avalanche Baseball, a youth baseball organization that serves the Youngstown and Western Pennsylvania areas. Under the organization’s umbrella are teams from 9U to 18U, as well as a collegiate team that plays in the Mahoning Valley Double-A league, according to its Facebook page.
The resolution will take effect in time for next season’s games, he added.
It is hoped Krainock will bring in 32 teams, with several additional leagues being considered to play there, the mayor continued.
Because of the fields’ condition, the Campbell High School Red Devils baseball team has had to play its home games at Bob Cene Park in Struthers, Valentino said.
Krainock said the fields have been in disuse for about four or five years.
Also at Wednesday’s session, council approved an ordinance to set slightly realigned boundaries for the city’s four wards.
Councilman Timothy O’Bryan, D-1st Ward, has spearheaded the effort to recalibrate the four wards’ borders in an effort to “reflect better numbers” via having more balanced populations in each one. The outcome will be better representation for each section of the city, O’Bryan has said.
As a result, the four wards should have greater population parity, with slightly under 2,000 residents in each one, according to the ordinance.
The 1st Ward encompasses the southern portion of the city of about 7,900. The 2nd Ward comprises the city’s eastern side, and the 3rd and 4th Wards make up most of the city’s north and west sides, respectively.
The next regular city council meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 7 at City Hall.
