Man shoots from sunroof on I-680
YOUNGSTOWN — In a scene too reminiscent of an action-adventure movie, a driver reported that a person was firing a gun at him on Interstate-680 Tuesday afternoon.
The victim said he was traveling south on I-680 when he saw a white vehicle following him. The vehicle had been at the same gas station as him on Shehy Street on the East Side, the driver told police.
Just after the South Avenue exit, the victim saw the other vehicle speed up and stay in the middle lane, while the victim was in the leftmost lane.
Next, “a male with a Carhart tan coat came out of the sun roof of the SUV with an automatic rifle and started shooting at (the victim),” who was driving a Cadillac Escalade.
The victim said his car was struck four to five times, which disabled it because one of the shots hit the engine block, the report states. The victim said he steered his vehicle to safety to the right shoulder of the road. The white SUV then exited I-680 south by getting off at the Shirley Road exit.
But before it disappeared, it also stopped on the ramp and “opened fire again before speeding off,” the report states.
The report does not mention anyone being injured.
Officers inspecting the damaged vehicle saw that a bullet went through the lower windshield and two bullets passed through the hood. Another one or two bullets passed through the front grill and bumper.
An off-duty police officer was traveling behind the two vehicles and “observed the whole incident,” the report states. The officer’s observations matched the victim’s account of the drama, the report notes.
The victim did not recognize “driver, nor shooter,” he told police. An officer looked for spent rifle casings, but did not find any. The officer also checked with the gas station on Shehy Street for video footage but did not immediately secure it, the report states.
