Man says he was shot in hip during attempted robbery

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN — A man told police he was shot in the hip Monday evening during an attempted robbery by three men on Tyrell Avenue on the West Side.

While officers were en route to Tyrell Avenue for a 7:36 p.m. incident, dispatchers were alerted to a victim on another street. Officers went there and spoke with the victim.

He said he was on Tyrell Avenue when three men tried to rob him. He ran when he heard a gunshot and was still running when he felt a pain in his hip and realized he was shot, the report states. He said he ran to a home on another street.

Officers who responded to Tyrell Avenue reported that they found seven bullet shell casings in the parking lot, sidewalk and grass of an apartment building. Ambulance personnel arrived and transported the victim to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment.

The victim had a hole in his shirt and hooded sweatshirt and a shallow entry wound in his hip area, the report states.

Officers noticed a window in an apartment had been hit and spoke with the people who live there. A person said the bullet hole happened after the gunfire. The person said he or she heard a sound like something breaking in his apartment, but officers could not locate a bullet.

The report did not give a condition for the victim, but the report did state that the victim was “not a trauma case,” but he was still going for “imaging.”
