Man faces up to 8 years in prison in East Side burglary

YOUNGSTOWN — Conovas Crawford, 37, was arraigned Monday on a charge of burglary in an early Saturday incident on Republic Avenue on the East Side in which he is accused of breaking into a home and scattering belongings from the home onto the front porch and back yard.

If Crawford is convicted of burglary, he could get about eight years in prison.

A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to Republic Avenue at 1:43 a.m. Saturday for an alarm notification and broken glass. They spoke with the victim, who said that when he arrived there, he saw the front window was shattered, as well as an east side window.

He said whoever broke in tried to take a flat-screen television and clothes, but they “dropped in the back yard.” Officers saw “the front and side windows shattered, items all over the porch as well as the TV in the back yard.”

The report noted that “prior to this call, the police department’s Neighborhood Response Unit was in foot pursuit” on Kimmel Street and Berkeley Avenue on the East Side, not far south of Republic Avenue.

The driver fled on foot, possibly in the area of Commonwealth and Republic avenues. An officer “held a perimeter” in the area for a police dog to track the suspect. During the track, a Youngstown officer saw Crawford on the ground near Commonwealth Avenue, and detained him.

Crawford told officers he was stabbed by a woman at the house on Republic where the burglary took place and ran into the woods to seek help. He said that the owner of the home on Republic Avenue allowed him to stay at the house with an unknown woman for a few days, according to the police report.

Officers detained Crawford while they went back to the home on Republic. They asked the victim if he knew Crawford and whether he had allowed Crawford to stay there. The owner said he did not recognize Crawford.

Officers then read Crawford his rights and found broken glass in his pocket. The glass was bagged as possible evidence. Crawford had a cut on his left hand that was bleeding heavily. Crawford was taken to the county jail.

The foot pursuit on Kimmel Street involved a 1:44 a.m. Saturday traffic stop at Kimmel Street and Berkeley Avenue in which a Honda turned into a driveway and failed to activate a turn signal prior to 100 feet from the turn.

Officers activated lights and siren, and the vehicle came to a stop. But the front seat passenger fled on foot. One officer chased the man, Nathaniel Baker, and apprehended him. He had a warrant and was taken into custody on that and a misdemeanor charge of obstructing official business.

The female driver, who was “known to” officers, ” was able to avoid being apprehended by officers,” the report states, noting that the car was left in drive when it came to a stop, so an officer went to the car and put it in park. Baker “complained of pain,” so he was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and later to the county jail.
