East Side man arraigned on burglary charge
YOUNGSTOWN — Roosevelt Perry of Buckeye Court was arraigned Wednesday in Youngstown Municipal Court on charges of aggravated burglary and misdemeanor domestic violence and resisting arrest in a late Tuesday incident on Buckeye Court on the East Side in which he is accused of entering the home of a woman he knows multiple times through a faulty door without permission.
If he is convicted of aggravated burglary, he could get about 10 years in prison. Bond was set at $50,000 on the aggravated burglary.
A Youngstown police report states that they were called to an apartment on Buckeye Court at 11:55 p.m. regarding a break-in and assault. When they arrived, they spoke to the victim, who said she has a protection order against Perry, but he knocked on her door that evening, and she let him in. They drank together, with Perry drinking a lot more than her, she said.
At some point she realized she should not be in that position because he had “put his hands on her” in the past, so she asked him to leave.
He walked out the door, but did not leave the area. He would lie down on the porch or stand in front of her window. On several occasions, he tried to get into the apartment by jiggling or pushing the door handle. Two or three times, he was able to get in that way because of a faulty lock, the woman reported.
When she came downstairs, he would be sitting in her living room, she said. She said he would “put hands on” her and then seemingly leave.
The last time, she stood at the door and tried to keep him out by holding the door, but he pushed past her and assaulted her “again by punching her in the head, jaw and thighs, kicking her in the shins with his shoes on, telling her that he wanted to kill her and pouring liquor on her head,” she stated.
She said when she tried to get away from him, he would “corner her in the living room.” Perry also prevented the woman from leaving the apartment and would not allow another person to enter the apartment.
She collapsed in the apartment from the pain of him kicking her in the ankle, and he dragged her into the living room. She was able to get out of the apartment, and Perry locked the door. He then left the apartment and went to one belonging to his nephew in the same apartment complex.
A neighbor of the victim told police she could hear the woman screaming and Perry yelling in the apartment, but the neighbor said he or she could not get in. The person saw Perry at one point through a window on top of the victim in the living room, the report states.
Officers went to another apartment and were told that Perry was there but he was headed toward the back door. Officers searched in that area but did not find Perry, then heard that Perry had come back. He ran out of the front door and into nearby woods near Atkinson and Republic avenues. Officers found him lying in vines and branches and took him into custody.
The victim had a small lump on her forehead and a small area on one shin where the skin seemed to have been scraped off. She had no other injuries and declined medical attention, the report states.
Perry, 61, remained in the Mahoning County jail Thursday on the charges and is set for his next hearing at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 3 in Youngstown Municipal Court. He also has several other pending misdemeanor charges in that same court — domestic violence, aggravated menacing and violating a protection order. Those charges are from Sept. 6, court records show.
