1 of 4 vehicles in Canfield Road crash went airborne, rolled

YOUNGSTOWN — Three people suffered suspected minor injuries in a four-vehicle accident on Canfield Road near Billingsgate Avenue Tuesday afternoon that involved one car crossing the center lane into oncoming traffic and flying over the top of another car and then “rolling while airborne” and ending up on its roof.

A 3-month-old child was one of the people injured. She was taken by ambulance to Akron Children’s in Boardman.

A Youngstown police crash report states that the accident happened at 2:43 p.m.

A person was driving a 2017 Jeep Cherokee west on Canfield Road near Billingsgate, and a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic was making a westbound turn onto Canfield Road from Billingsgate behind the Jeep.

A 2011 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling east on Canfield Road, and a 2012 Ford Fusion was also traveling east on Canfield Road behind the Malibu. When the Sonic tried to pass the Jeep at a high rate of speed, it struck the Jeep in the rear.

The Sonic then failed to control and crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic, hitting the oncoming Malibu and rolling while airborne.

The Sonic then struck a stone pillar at the end of a driveway, landing on its roof.

The report states that there were three witnesses to the accident. The Jeep, the Malibu and the Sonic sustained disabling damage, the report states.
