Plans for Hubbard Township bridge dedication set

HUBBARD TOWNSHIP — A date and time have been set for a bridge dedication honoring the community’s first responders.

As part of his report on last month’s Eagle Joint Fire District meeting, Trustee Jason Tedrow reported that the community will be holding a bridge dedication 10 a.m. Oct. 25 on East Water Street by St. Patrick Church.

Following that dedication, Tedrow said officials will move to the fire department to present proclamations commemorating the fire department’s 150th anniversary, noting it to be a “long road” since 1875.

“Through the era of the steel era and everything else that we’ve had, there’s been lots of ups and downs in Hubbard,” Tedrow said. “I think our fire department has — whether we love them or hate them — has always serviced our community in our greatest time of need.”

NEW BUILDING?

Tedrow also reported an anonymous township resident had offered to donate “upwards” of three to five acres for a potential new location for the fire department — if the department can secure grant money.

It was something the fire department had always been exploring, he added, and they were looking at a property between the existing fire department and Walgreens. However, it would have been a two-story building and would have resulted in limited space.

Tedrow said the proposed property is about “dead-center” in the entire jurisdiction, which would create consistent drive time — regardless of which side of the community an emergency happens on.

Tedrow said he’s hoping the fire board takes it into “serious consideration,” adding the property owner would potentially be willing to help fund the feasibility study for it.

“The old one (fire station) has been there for over 100 years and it’s getting fairly tight for some of the new equipment; it’s a lot larger,” Tedrow said. “That’s one thing we’ll be continuing to discuss but probably won’t have a decision on until next year.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
