YOUNGSTOWN -- A 56-year-old man has been arrested on charges of abusing a patient at a Youngstown nursing home.
Marc Berry was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitives Task Force on Wednesday on a warrant through Youngstown Municipal Court on felony patient abuse for a Sept. 16 altercation at Canfield Healthcare nursing home on Canfield Road in which he is accused of assaulting a resident.
He is scheduled for arraignment today on the fourth-degree felony. If he is convicted, he could get more than a year in prison.
A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to the nursing home and spoke with staff members, who said that a resident and staff member Berry were engaged in a physical altercation.
Officers then spoke to the resident, who said he and Berry got into an argument in the hallway, and Berry pushed the resident against a wall and started punching him in the right side and left neck area. The resident uses a wheelchair.
He said he just had surgery, and his left hip also was in pain, but he did not remember all of the places where Berry "made contact with him." He added that Berry also "jumped on top" of him and continued hitting him.
Berry then left the facility, the report states.
No "noticeable injuries could be seen" on the victim, the report notes. Police collected witness statements and noted that the nursing home has cameras in the hallway where the argument took place.
The charge was filed Sept. 26, according to court documents.
Marshals arrested Berry at 11 a.m. Wednesday. He was taken to the county jail, where he remained Thursday afternoon.
