YSU enrollment of 12,240 students highest since 2018

YOUNGSTOWN — A spokesperson for Youngstown State University on Friday provided more precise enrollment numbers for fall semester, which were up for the second year in a row.
Becky Rose said total student headcount for fall 2025 is 12,240, an increase over last fall’s official total headcount of 12,164.
The fall 2025 enrollment includes 9,277 full-time equivalent enrolled students, up 1.9% from last fall, Rose said.
“This increase is particularly impressive given the fact that for the 2024-25 academic year, YSU awarded the highest number of degrees over the past 14 years,” Rose said in a statement.
YSU awarded 3,248 degrees for the 2024-25 academic year. That number was 2,033 in the 2011-12 academic year, according to Rose’s figures. It was 2,218 in the 2018-19 academic year.
Also up at YSU was the number of first-time undergraduate student enrollment at 1,826 (2.5% increase from fall 2024); first-time graduate student enrollment at 543 (6.9% increase); and doctoral enrollment at 274 (28% increase). In-state enrollment is 9,476, which is a 4.5% increase over last fall.
Rose said online enrollment is 2,092, which is up 25% compared with the fall 2024 semester, and College Credit Plus enrollment is 1,464, which is up 24%. The latter is a program in which high school students take classes for college credit.
Her numbers also show that on-campus associate degree enrollment is at 704, a 37% increase over fall 2024. Continuing student enrollment is at 7,650, which is up slightly, 1.1%, over last year.
A news release announcing the increased enrollment was sent following Wednesday’s monthly meeting of the YSU board of trustees.
“The growth builds on the university’s record-setting enrollment surge in fall 2024, making this the first back-to-back enrollment increase in more than a decade,” the release states.
International enrollment continues to hold steady. YSU enrolled 351 new international students, exceeding its target of 250 to 350. Total international enrollment stands at 1,251 students, right in the middle of the university’s goal of 1,200 to 1,300, even as many institutions nationwide report declines, the news release states.
“This is two years in a row of growth. That doesn’t just happen — it’s the result of relentless effort across this campus,” YSU President Bill Johnson stated in the release. “It is proof that Youngstown State University continues to deliver unmatched value in higher education.
“Last fall’s surge was fueled by unique factors — Eastern Gateway transfers, international growth and a spike in College Credit Plus students. The idea that we could stack another year of growth on top of that? Highly unlikely. But here we are. YSU has defied the odds.”
YSU remains firmly positioned as Northeast Ohio’s anchor institution, serving as a hub of educational excellence, innovation and community impact, the release states.
