Warren man accused of using fake bills in Liberty
GIRARD — A Warren man made an appearance in Girard Municipal Court on Tuesday for charges stemming from an arrest in Liberty.
Brandan Daniels, 38, pleaded not guilty to attempted theft, while no plea was entered on a charge of counterfeiting.
According to the police report, an officer responded to Walmart in response to reports of an attempted theft, where Walmart security personnel said a man tried making a purchase with counterfeit currency. Dispatchers described the man and his vehicle, and officers pulled him over on Belmont Avenue near Wendy’s.
The report states Daniels, who was later identified, told the officer that he was “embarrassed” and tried to purchase a gaming console, where employees then said his money was counterfeit. Daniels said he had won $600 while playing a card game in Warren, handing the officer $500 worth of counterfeit $100 bills and pulling the last one from his wallet, according to the report.
Upon running Daniels’ information through LEADS, it was discovered he had a warrant out of Cleveland Police Department, although it was outside of the pickup radius.
The report states Daniels said he had no idea that the money was fake and he told the officer he was just excited to win — not knowing it was fake until the cashier marked the money. The officer noted the money was “very obviously counterfeit,” pointing out that it felt fake and had the words “copy” and “for motion picture purposes” on both sides.
Daniels is set to appear back in court for his charges Sept. 10, according to court records.
