Ursuline coaches placed on leave following hazing lawsuit
YOUNGSTOWN — Three members of the Ursuline football coaching staff were placed on administrative leave Monday as the team is being sued in federal court for an alleged hazing incident during the team’s summer trip to a series of football camps in the southern United States.
Head coach Dan Reardon and assistant coaches Tim McGlynn and Christian Syrianoudis were placed on leave for the rest of the season, according to a news release issued by Ursuline High School Monday night.
Michael Frasco will serve as the interim head coach for the rest of the 2025 campaign.
The full statement from Ursuline High School officials reads:
“Ursuline announces that Michael Frasco, a long-time assistant coach, will be its interim head football coach for the remainder of the football season.
“Coach McGlynn and Coach Syrianoudis were placed on administrative leave on September 8 pending the outcomes of the ongoing investigations and litigation. There have been no decisions regarding renewal of their contracts or future employment.
“Coach Reardon has agreed to an indeterminate suspension on September 8, pending the outcomes of the ongoing investigations and litigation. Likewise, there have been no decisions regarding renewal of Coach Reardon’s contract or future employment.
“Ursuline is unable to share additional information at this time.”
On Sept. 2, a lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio by The Chandra Law Firm, with Chandra Law managing partner Subodh Chandra serving as the lead counsel.
It alleged that Ursuline High School, its officials and coaches failed to protect students “from a long-standing culture of hazing within the football program.”
Ursuline Principal Matthew Sammartino, Assistant Principal Margaret Damore, Reardon, McGlynn and Syrianoudis were named in the lawsuit.
According to the complaint, a group of Ursuline football players assaulted a teammate during the trip. It also alleges that when Sammartino and Damore were made aware of the complaint from the player’s parent, the school’s administration acted to cover up the events of the trip.
Ursuline High School officials said they conducted an internal investigation in July after “inappropriate behavior” was reported following the trip.
Ursuline canceled its game Friday against Farrell (Pa.) after the lawsuit became public.
The Fighting Irish will not play this Friday since they kept Week 4 open to begin the season. They are scheduled to return to action on Sept. 19 when they host Warren G. Harding at Stambaugh Stadium.
