WARREN — A few hundred people came to Courthouse Square Monday to protest President Donald Trump’s policies and what they say is his favoritism toward the wealthy over the working class.

The theme of the Labor Day protest event in Warren was “Workers Over Billionaires,” and was among more than 2,000 similar rallies held nationwide Monday.

“We’re standing up for democracy and people’s rights,” said Ashley Burnett of Cortland, who attended the Warren rally. “Many people’s rights are being threatened. It’s liberty and justice for all, not just the chosen few. I’m here to make sure our voices are heard. I’m standing up for those who are being affected by Trump’s policies and being pushed down.”

Joining Burnett at the protest was Sue Knepper of Cortland.

“This should be everybody’s country,” she said. “I hate them against us and that’s what this administration is doing. United we stand. That isn’t occurring.”

Gary Tuttle of Fowler, who founded Good Trouble Trumbull, organized Monday’s event as well as several others in Courthouse Square against Trump, his policies and his supporters.

“We’re trying to make our voices heard,” he said. “We don’t like what our representatives are doing. They’re not representing us. We’re dissatisfied with this administration. The policies are not helping the people — just the rich and that’s what we’re demonstrating against.”

Tuttle said having regular protests against the current administration lets people know that they’re not the only ones in opposition.

“Some people don’t know how to respond so this gives them a venue to do that and to meet people who think what they think,” Tuttle said. “This administration is taking the country in the wrong direction and people are upset about it. Trump and his friends are trying to make this country into an authoritarian state.”

Several drivers passing the event honked their horns in support while some shouted against those at the protest.

The White House on Monday called Trump “the champion of the American worker. From surging native-born employment and rising blue-collar wages to innovative workforce initiatives like expanding apprenticeships and trade school funding, the Trump administration is reversing decades of neglect and finally putting American workers first.”

But Harry Forepaugh of Bristolville and his friend, Tim Krizan of Negley, who were at the Warren demonstration, see it differently.

“We’re trying to stop the dictator,” Forepaugh said of Trump. “This isn’t how our country is supposed to work. How do they justify all their cuts?

Krizan said: “A billionaire shouldn’t pay less taxes than I do. We are getting robbed blind.”

Ken Davis of Warren said he is a regular at the anti-Trump events in Courthouse Square.

“Trump gave too many tax cuts to billionaires,” Davis said. “I’m fearful of him and the joke of a Cabinet he’s installed. He’s moving us toward authoritarian rule.”
