Four indicted in Boardman bathroom assault

YOUNGSTOWN — A Mahoning County grand jury has indicted four men accused of assaulting another man in a restaurant bathroom in January.

The secret indictment names Kyle Patterson, 27, of Boardman; Luke Collins, 22, of Campbell; Tyler Dogoda, 31, of Boardman; and Caleb Gearheart, 26, of Austintown, and charges all four men with one count each of felonious assault, a second-degree felony.

The charges resulted from an incident that allegedly occurred Jan. 12 at Double Bogey’s at the Southern Park Mall in Boardman. The Boardman police report initially only named Gearheart and Patterson, and only charged them with simple assault, a misdemeanor.

Boardman police could not be reached Wednesday to explain why the charges were escalated to felonies.

The report states that police were called to St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital early that afternoon to take a report from a man who said he had been assaulted in the bathroom at the restaurant in the early hours that morning.

The man told police he went into the men’s bathroom at Double Bogey’s about 1:30 a.m., where he encountered the four defendants. He told police he had had an argument with Patterson at a Youngstown bar previously.

He told police that Patterson first stared at him, then they began arguing and the men blocked the door so he could not leave the bathroom. The report states he told police Patterson shoved him and then he stepped toward Patterson again. He told police that the next thing he remembered was waking up on the bathroom floor with a black eye and a cut on his hand, and the four men were gone.

The man told police his foot also may have been broken, and he was awaiting X-ray results to determine his condition.

Mahoning County court records show no prior offenses for the men other than one traffic ticket for Patterson from 2017 and two for Dogoda from 2014.
