East Side boy accidentally shoots himself

A 13-year-old boy shot himself accidentally while handling a gun just before 7 p.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of Rosewood Lane on the East Side.

The child was “rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition,” according to a Youngstown Police Department report. The Youngstown Police Crime Lab and detectives are investigating.

FALSE ALARM

Elijah Rodriguez, 18, was charged with first-degree misdemeanor making false alarms after he told police Sunday night he called 911 to report that a man with a name similar to his own “just shot and killed someone with a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun.”

The caller told dispatchers that the shooting happened on East Lucius Avenue on the South Side, according to a Youngtown police report.

When an officer arrived on East Lucius in response to the call, he saw Rodriguez walking west on Lucius. He said there had been an argument. Officers detained him, and another officer went to the address where the caller said the shooting happened.

A woman there said there was no shooting, and Rodriguez is her son. There was an argument because she cleaned her son’s room, and he thought she had lost or taken his truck key. She did not have it, she said.

Rodriguez told an officer he told a dispatcher that there had been a shooting. He was placed under arrest for making false alarms. He was scheduled for arraignment Monday afternoon in Youngstown Municipal Court.

The police report states that while in the back of a police cruiser, Rodgriguez made a “spontaneous utterance during the drive to the jail that he had told police there was a shooting in order to get police to respond faster.”

Gonzalez did not appear to be in the Mahoning County jail Monday afternoon.
