Boardman Subaru gives Glenwood a boost

BOARDMAN — Laura Frost believes that much of the fun of science lies in making science fun, and her teaching philosophy will be receiving a bit of a financial boost.

“I feel that the new school year brings new opportunities,” Frost, a Boardman Glenwood Junior High School eighth-grade science teacher, said.

The 13-year teacher’s classroom will be the recipient of a portion of a $10,000 donation, courtesy of Boardman Subaru, which made the contribution and brought about 20 boxes of essential supplies for students to the school Wednesday morning.

The effort was part of a Subaru Loves Learning initiative, in collaboration with www.adoptaclassroom.org, a 27-year-old organization committed to advancing equity in education, in part by ensuring students have needed supplies.

Adoptaclassroom.org operates on four pillars: educators create a classroom page and apply for grants, donors contribute to a specific school, fund or classroom, teachers order what they need, and donors receive updates regarding the impact their gifts have made. Since its inception, the organization has adopted 300,000 classrooms, supported 7 million students and raised $74 million, according to the website.

“It’s awesome that Boardman Subaru is supplying our community like this,” Frost said, adding that even small items such as colored markers and pencils are important, since many of them inevitably get lost or misplaced in the course of a school year.

Also happy with being on the receiving end of a monetary boost for his classroom was Carlo Cordon, a seventh-grade history teacher.

“Quite a few kids come in without such things as folders and pencils,” Cordon, a 31-year teacher, said.

Last year, his classroom got $200 from the initiative, which was used primarily to buy 15 headsets that allowed his students to listen and better connect with, and focus on, their Chromebooks, for example, Cordon added.

The 20 boxes of school supplies Boardman Subaru representatives brought included pens and pencils, folders, colored markers, earbuds and other important items to enhance students’ learning.

Those items were part of a drawing later Wednesday among the estimated 50 teachers, Principal Laura McCreery said, adding that the school has about 560 seventh- and eighth-grade students. The $10,000 donation will be divided evenly among the educators, McCreery noted.

Boardman Subaru and the school have an eight-year partnership, which is a core part of efforts to contribute to the larger community, Rob Fellman, the 21-year-old South Avenue business’s founder and president, noted. In addition, it represents one of many footprints the dealership has in the community that includes working with and contributing to Boardman Park, numerous athletic teams, Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman and Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, he said.

Such a donation to the school also eases the financial burden many teachers incur — sometimes to the tune of spending up to $900 of their money for classroom supplies, Fellman said.

The relationship with Boardman Glenwood Junior High also is close to Fellman’s heart, because he and his children attended the school, he added.

“The teachers helped me get to where I am today,” Fellman said.

“This partnership is so amazing,” McCreery added. “They have been so generous to our school for the eight years that we’ve been doing this.”

In a broader sense, Boardman Subaru’s outreach and partnerships also reflect a core value of the district as a whole, Superintendent Christopher Neifer said.
