Woman charged after two children found at gas station

YOUNGSTOWN — Two children, ages 18 months and 2-to-3 years old, were found at the Gas Mart, 2325 South Ave., at 11:20 a.m. Friday, and Melissa Kanos was charged with five counts of misdemeanor child endangering.

Kanos was arraigned Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court on the charges. She was still in the Mahoning County jail late Monday. Bond was set at $2,500.

A woman called 911 to report that a child 2 to 3 years old approached her vehicle, and she noticed a second child about 18 months old nearby.

Because the children were unsupervised in a high traffic area, she called 911. While waiting for police, a juvenile boy arrived and said one of the children was his brother and took him from the gas station, a Youngstown police report states.

When an officer arrived, he saw that a boy ages 2 to 3 was there with a Spider-Man shirt and diaper, but no shoes or socks on his feet. Mahoning County Children Services was notified, and a Children Services supervisor asked the officer to take the remaining child to the CSB offices on West Federal Street.

No calls came in to emergency services from 11:20 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. about a missing child. Children Services provided a photo of the child to Youngstown police, and it was posted on the Youngstown Police Department Facebook page.

At some point, a person called 911 from East Dewey Avenue a short distance away from the gas station regarding a missing child, the report states. While an officer was on his way to East Dewey, he saw a woman in the street who said her son was missing.

The officer went to the home on East Dewey where the call was made about the missing child and was advised he or she was “tired of the people” at a nearby house “losing their kids.”

It was about 1 p.m. when the officer was advised that the child was at Children Services and had been there a while. The woman who had lost her child said he was only missing for about 10 or 15 minutes, but when the officer questioned it, the woman said she had last seen the boy at 11 a.m.

The woman was shown a photo of the boy at CSB, and the woman confirmed it was her son, the report states.

The officer and others walked through the woman’s home, and it contained animal and possible human feces all over the flooring of the house. The smell of urine also was throughout the house, the report states.

There were flying and crawling bugs everywhere, and old food stuck to the floor throughout the house, the report states. The report states that 14 people, including 10 children, were living in the house. A lot of the kids sleep on the floor, and they are dirty, the report states.

The children looked like they had not showered for days. Many of the younger ones were in diapers overdue for changing with feces attached to their bodies, the report states.

Children Services deemed the house unsafe. Two birds and three dogs were taken to Animal Charity because of the condition of the house, the report states. One dog was very undernourished and had a sore all over its body that was bleeding, the report states.

All of the children were placed with relatives, and everyone had to vacate the home on Dewey. The report suggests that another woman was responsible for the other child found at the gas station, but no charges were on file Monday for, according to online court records.
