Hubbard woman who evaded cops pleads not guilty
HUBBARD — A Hubbard woman who evaded city police in July is still in the Trumbull County jail after making an appearance in Girard Municipal Court this week.
Kathleen Gerda, 43, pleaded not guilty to charges of willful and wanton operation and operation of a special vehicle on or near the highway. No plea was entered for her felony charge of failure to comply with an officer’s order or signal.
According to the police report, an officer noticed a woman on a minibike riding on the road near Doris and Raymond Drive, initiating a traffic stop and approaching Gerda, whom the officer was familiar with from prior interactions.
Gerda apologized to the officer, saying she was trying to get the bike home to Drummond Avenue, adding that she had a warrant for an incident that happened at Love’s Truckstop a while ago.
Upon searching for Gerda through LEADS, she was found to have a probation violation in Girard Municipal Court for a charge in Hubbard Township, and an officer spoke with the township’s on-duty officer to coordinate an exchange.
The report states that upon returning to Gerda and telling her she was in custody, the officer asked her to contact someone to help pick up the minibike and avoid the cost of towing. Gerda started to recite a phone number, then started the bike and ran from the officers down Moore Street.
The report states that the officer lost sight of Gerda because it was dark and there were no lights on her minibike. He stopped at Elmwood Drive and Moore Street to determine which way she fled.
The officer started to catch up with her as she was going through stop signs at a high rate of speed, but lost sight of her again in the area of Moore Street and James Road.
The report states that people outside told officers she continued speeding on Moore Street toward North Main Street and almost getting hit by a car for not stopping at the intersection.
Gerda’s bond was set at $15,000, and she’s set to appear back in court for her charges Thursday, according to court records.
