City police handle multiple gun-related cases over weekend

YOUNGSTOWN — Three police reports from over the weekend involved guns and gunfire in the city, but no injuries were reported.

At 3:17 a.m. Saturday, officers were sent to South and Indianola avenues because of gunfire coming from nearby Marmion Avenue and Rush Boulevard on the South Side.

As officers entered the area, they saw two vehicles fleeing the area, one a red Dodge Durango. It had at least two males in it, both with the hoods on their sweatshirts up and masks on their faces, a Youngstown police report states. Officers took note of the license plate number on the car.

The vehicle traveled south on Gibson Avenue from Indianola Avenue. As the cruiser got behind the vehicle, the vehicle abruptly turned west at high speed, the report states. Officers activated their cruiser’s lights and siren, but the driver did not stop. The chase reached speeds of 80 mph as the vehicle led officers on a short vehicle pursuit that ended as the fleeing vehicle entered Struthers, the report states.

At 2:26 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to ShotSpotter notifications and 911 calls about gunfire at Rush Boulevard and East Boston Avenue, also on the South Side. ShotSpotter notifies Youngstown police of gunfire on the South Side.

When officers arrived, residents said no one was injured and no property was damaged. Officers found 19 spent rifle bullet shell casings and nine other types of bullet shell casings scattered across an area of about half a block, the report states. The casings were collected as evidence.

At 11:17 p.m. on Friday, officers saw three people in a vehicle in a parking lot on Commerce Street downtown “sitting in the auto with no purpose to do business with any of the downtown businesses, which violates” the criminal trespass ordinance, the report states. Officers activated lights and sirens to make contact with the occupants.

While talking to the occupants, officers saw two open cups, which is a violation of the open container law, according to the report.

Officers asked the three to exit the vehicle. Officers then found a loaded handgun on the floorboard of the vehicle. All three occupants were handcuffed.

The driver, Montand Mosley, 21, who was closest to the firearm, was charged with felony improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He had been adjudicated delinquent for a high-level felony of improperly discharging firearms at or into a habitation in a 2020 juvenile case, meaning he was not allowed to possess a firearm, the report states. The two other people in the car were released without charges.

Mosley was arraigned on the charges Monday afternoon in Youngstown Municipal Court and he returns for a preliminary hearing on the two felony charges at 9:15 a.m. Aug. 18.

One of the passengers, Terrance Green, 21, was charged with minor misdemeanor having an open container of alcohol and pleaded guilty to the offense during his arraignment Monday. His fine and costs were $150, according to court records.

Starting at $3.23/week.
