Beethoven in spotlight next season for Warren Philharmonic
The Warren Philharmonic Orchestra will deliver a double dose of Beethoven for its 2025-26 season.
Ludwig van Beethoven’s Overture to Egmont will be part of a “Fall Masterworks” concert on Oct. 4 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 will close the “Sounds of Spring” performance on May 9, 2026.
Austintown native Christopher Cicconi, who is starting his second year as conductor and music director of the orchestra, said he let the timing of each concert influence his programming.
“For example, in the spring, you will hear the Beethoven sixth symphony, also referred to as the Pastoral, where Beethoven in all of his genius writes music to depict the sounds of spring, including an intense thunderstorm. It coincides nicely with the finale to season one, where we performed his fifth symphony, which ironically premiered on the same concert as the sixth. The WPO will surely be amazing on this piece.”
In addition to Beethoven, the fall concert will include Johannes Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn and Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4. Other selections for “Sounds of Spring” are Gioachino Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” overture and Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring,” which Cicconi called one of his favorite works in the classical canon.
“This beautiful work masterfully depicts the emotion of Appalachia,” he said. “Moreover, we will be doing his original version of the work, which includes an intimate setting of only 13 players. Audiences are accustomed to the full symphonic version, so the WPO is thrilled to present the work in its original form.”
Guest artists for the season still are being finalized and will be announced soon.
Both concerts will take place at Lakeview High School auditorium. Last season the orchestra played one show at Lakeview and one at Warren’s First Presbyterian Church, its home for the past several seasons.
