Assault at hotel reported
BOARDMAN — A man was charged with multiple crimes, including a felony, after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend at a local hotel.
Police were called to the Fairfield Inn on Tiffany South Boulevard early Monday after the desk clerk called to report an assault outside the lobby. Corinthians Clair White, 28, of Youngstown, was arrested and faces one charge of strangulation, a second-degree felony, and one count each of domestic violence and threats of domestic violence.
He appeared Tuesday in Mahoning County Boardman Court, where Judge Joseph Houser imposed a $35,000 total cash or surety bond and ordered him to have no contact with the victim. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Aug. 19.
The police report states that the reporting officer arrived to find the victim standing on the opposite side of a police car from White, crying and speaking in a hushed tone so he could not hear her.
She told police that an argument began inside the hotel when a member of her family texted her, and White lost his temper and accused her of cheating.
She said they were arguing in the lobby and the desk clerk told them to take it outside. The clerk later told police he could see what he thought was White picking the woman up, so he called to report it.
The woman said that once they walked outside, he began strangling her with both hands. She stated that he also picked her up by her jaw and neck from behind and that at one point he had her in a headlock, but she was able to get free.
White allegedly told her he would break her jaw, “beat her ass” and smash her phone. She told police he asked her if she was scared and she said yes just to get him to stop. The woman repeatedly declined to press charges and police had to sign the charging papers on her behalf.
The woman told police that another incident occurred Saturday when White became enraged that a friend of hers had gotten her a hotel room. She stated that he held one of the knives in the room to her neck and showed police a cut she sustained while trying to take it off of him.
She told police White has hit her before and she also was afraid to go to the hotel room with him Monday morning because she was afraid that he would kill her, given his state of mind.
In June 2018, White pleaded guilty to one felony count of endangering children, while five other felony counts of the same were dismissed. He was sentenced to four years in prison and granted judicial release in April 2019 with five years of probation, according to court records.
In January 2020, he was arrested on a probation violation and ordered to serve the remainder of his sentence, with three years of probation to follow.
