3-year-old in Struthers shot, dies in gun tragedy
STRUTHERS — City police are investigating after a 3-year-old was shot in a home Friday afternoon.
Police responded to a home on the 400 block of Spring Street, where sources say the child was shot after getting hold of an unsecured firearm.
“There was an unsecured firearm in a home and, the worst possible thing happened and a child got a hold of it,” said Struthers Capt. D.J. Aldish.
According to published reports, the child was being taken from the scene by car when Boardman police and fire personnel stopped to assist.
The Mahoning County Coroner confirmed the child died from his injuries around 3 p.m. The case is still under investigation.
Attempts to reach safety personnel for additional comments were unsuccessful.
