Warren Township sewer work OK’d by commissioners

WARREN — Trumbull County commissioners approved everything on their agenda Wednesday, including items dealing with a proposed Weathersfield annexation, putting a Children Services levy renewal on the November ballot and awarding a contract for a sewer project in the Pendleton and Gillmer roads area of Warren Township.

But they also heard remarks from Commissioner Denny Malloy regarding the July 14 death of Catherine Blaney, 87, of Hartford, with whom Malloy served on the Trumbull County Tourism Board many years ago.

She was co-owner with her husband, Lou, of Blaney Lumber and Sharon Speedway; mother of Dale and Dave Blaney, race car drivers; and grandmother of Ryan Blaney, who won the NASCAR Series Cup in 2023. The racing career of her husband Lou Blaney put him in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame.

“I got to serve with her for six years on that board,” Malloy said of Catherine Blaney. “And she didn’t care just about Sharon Speedway. She cared about the whole county and making sure we promoted every attraction in the county,” he said.

“She was a very, very fair lady, very diplomatic, very strong and powerful woman in the meetings. And we would not have the tourism bureau as good as it is today for (current director) Beth Carmichael to run if not for the services Kate provided to our county.”

He said she is known through her church and throughout the community for her positive impact. Malloy said he previously suggested that there be a “Blaney Family Day in Trumbull County “not only for what Kate has done” but also the rest of her family.

“I think we need to recognize that we are proud that they are from our community. I think some day we need to do something as a board of commissioners to honor the whole family,” Malloy said.

In other business, commissioners:

• Awarded a $8,743,789 contract to Woodford Excavating of Leavittsburg to build the Pendleton Road / Gillmer Road Sanitary Sewer project.

• Approved a resolution to journalize the filing of an annexation petition by Gearmar Properties Inc. for 122 acres of land in Weathersfield Township that is “contiguous” to Niles. Niles Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz said the proposed annexation would be into Niles. The property is on the west side of North Main Street just north of BRT Extrusions, which is in Niles, he said. A public hearing will be held in the coming months for the public to be able to comment on it, county officials said.

• Approved a resolution to proceed with the steps to put a 2-mill, 5-year renewal levy on the November ballot for Trumbull County Children Services. It would collect $7,072,547 annually.

Starting at $3.23/week.
