Many police respond to domestic disturbance

HUBBARD — A man was arrested as law enforcement from across Trumbull County responded to a domestic situation early Tuesday.

According to a news release from the city’s police department, officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Saul Drive in response to a domestic violence report in which threats of harm were involved.

The release states officers learned that the caller, a woman, had locked herself in a bathroom to protect herself from a man who was making violent threats toward her and expressed feelings of self-harm. The man also allegedly made statements suggesting he wanted to provoke law enforcement into using deadly force on him, which is commonly known as “suicide by cop.”

While officers couldn’t make contact with anyone at the residence, the woman was able to escape safely.

Due to the “volatile nature” of the situation, the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team ) was called and responded to the location, and, using a drone to access the building’s interior, was able to confirm the man’s location and condition without putting officers at risk.

The release states CRT deployed “less-lethal” force options to safely remove the man from the building after they continued to negotiate with him.

He was taken into custody without incident and transported to an unidentified local hospital for treatment of self-inflicted injuries.

He remained under medical evaluation later Tuesday. Criminal charges are still pending as the investigation continues.

The city’s police department extended its appreciation to agencies such as the county’s 911 center, Brookfield, Hubbard, Liberty and Vienna township personnel, as well as those from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Eagle Joint Fire District and CRT for helping.

“This incident could have ended in tragedy, but thanks to the professionalism, patience and training of the officers, it was resolved safely,” Hubbard police Chief Robert Thompson said.
